A family of hobbies
Sports
The sporting family keeps score, which changes everything: there is an opponent, a clock, or a personal best, and improvement is a number rather than a feeling.
It stretches further than the word suggests — chess and athletics share almost nothing physically, but both are structured practice measured against somebody.
